The History of Heart's Content Bed and Breakfast
Heart's Content was built in 1903 by Annie C. Hossley (Wohner) and Louis P. Hossley. Louis and Annie's brother John Wohner operated a saloon known as Wohner's Corner on the Northwest corner of the town square in Canton, Mississippi. The building is still standing today and houses the Canton Film Museum. Annie named her new home "Heart's Content", and she truely loved this home. The saloon business proved to be profitable and shows in the details incorporated into their home. Crystal chandeliers adorned the lower rooms, of which the dining room fixture still remains. All of the ceilings in the home are 12 feet high and covered in ornate "punched tin". The center hall features a grand mahogany staircase, prime for welcoming any blushing bride. On the newel post stands Cupid holding his bow and arrows. Heart's Content also has an elevator which was installed to assist family members and the family doctor traverse the stairs.
Much of Annie's family is still living in Canton and has given us many stories of what it was like in this home over the past one hundred years or so. Homemade pasta dinners on Sunday afternoons, music and dancing on the back porch, catching fish and frogs in the pond to name a few. Many weddings have been held here and this house was a gathering place for the family.
